Spaces to Accommodate Any Frame of Mind

Beyond paying special attention to the critical factors of lighting, acoustics, technical connectivity, and ergonomic furniture, Muse has designed diverse and interwoven immersive environments that harness the subtle power of mood, object placement, and navigation to transport members sense of place, ignite the imagination, and facilitate flow.

Quiet Spaces for Deep Work

Instead of open floor plans and desks in plain sight, imagine perches, coves, nooks, and even elevated tree houses - providing perfect environments for uninterrupted focus and naturally situated for safe distance without the feeling of isolation.

Conservatory

The vibe of the Conservatory will be peaceful and receptive with seating arranged around reflecting pools and wondrous objects, like mobiles and kinetic clocks.

Library

The Library will be warm and cozy with fire lit fixtures, towering bookcases, and hidden staircases with many private nooks to hunker down.

Quiet Forest

The Quiet Forest will be enchanting and serene with it's sophisticated installation of trunks, poles and beams with live air plants and various types of perches and elevated treehouses.

Active, Experiential Spaces

Knowing that curiosity and the pursuant thrill of discovery is a conduit to flow, Muse will weave opportunities to quickly and easily step into and out of a myriad of hands-on, interactive experiences throughout the day. Activities last from 30 seconds, 5 mins, 15 mins, 30+ mins and are engaged in a variety of ways: privately, one-on-one, or in a collaborative setting. Even passive observation of others engaging in activities can stimulate the imagination and result in renewed mental energy.

Active Forest

Although similar in aesthetic as the Quiet Forest, the Active Forest will be infused with opportunities to act; including woodburning tools and watercolors to decorate birch trees, along with modeling clay & stone carving stations.

Think Tank

The Think Tank will have a connected and curious vibe, outfitted with molecular shaped pods equipped to facilitate experimentation, microscope slide libraries, and a giant pendulum, propelled by the Earth's rotation, endlessly drawing fine lines in the sand.

Haberdashery + Paperie

Designed to be adjacent to each other, the Haberdashery and Paperie will have a colorful and playful vibe conducive to exploring the infinite possibilities of textile and paper arts.

Movement Studio + Vanity Rooms

The Movement Room will be a versatile open space ideal for a variety of activities and performative arts, especially our daily sunset silent dance parties! Connected will be our Vanity Rooms, our spin on the traditional changing room, equipped with wigs, costumery and face art ready to transform you into your alter ego.

Smash Rooms + Confessionals

Our Smash Rooms and Confessionals will provide safe spaces for satisfying release; sometimes you just need to break something or scream!

Ever-growing Catalog of Programming

To facilitate our programming, Muse has a network of over two hundred subject matter experts (our Muses), including artists, scientists, and musicians who can drop-in to guide and co-create an extraordinary experience unfound anywhere else; each shaped in the moment with whoever is present. Knowing this experience is un-replicable contributes to the sense of a “peak” moment and often results in a deep sense of community and connection.

Science of Flow

How does Muse facilitate flow?

The magic of Muse is in the seamless integration of diverse immersive environments, action-oriented programming, and a supportive community of creatives to cultivate an extraordinary experience. This blend results in an atmosphere that can breathe life into your work and create opportunities for individual and communal enrichment.

By prioritizing flow, Muse reorients the idea of “work” away from that of “labor” and toward “self-actualization” and the feeling of purpose and fulfillment that comes with high performance and productivity.

Why does flow feel so good and also lead to innovation?

In flow state, the brain releases five happy chemicals that make us feel good and achieve peak performance. The superior frontal gyrus, the part of the brain responsible for self-awareness and introspection, begins to shut down. This decrease in self-awareness makes us less inhibited and more likely to follow our creative instincts and try something new.

  • Dopamine - helps sharpen focus and find novel solutions to problems; create feelings of engagement, excitement and desire for exploration

  • Norepinephrine - helps maintain focus; increases blood sugar which boosts energy; speeds up heart rate and respiration which boosts muscles performance; increases emotional control, arousal and attention

  • Anandamide - boosts our creativity; increases lateral thought and ability to develop novel connections; reduces ability to feel fear

  • Endorphins - relief from muscle pain; natural endorphin is 100x more powerful than morphine

  • Serotonin – the “afterglow” that keeps us coming back for more¹

Why is it important to try something new?

Until recently it was believed that the brain couldn't regenerate itself and neurons simply died out as we age. Then, scientists discovered neuronal stem cells, and through brain scans witnessed that:

  • Critical areas in the brain are activated through imagination and creative action (including areas responsible for feeling happy)

  • To boost production of neurons, we need to be exposed to new environments where we learn new things rather than simply repeating existing skills

  • Engaging in stimulating activities that require concentration lower chance of Alzheimer's and dementia later in life ²

Origin Story

Muse is the culmination of two decades of creative collaboration between founders Alyssa Gundred and Jing Wang Herman. They met in 2000 as randomly assigned roommates in their freshman dorm at NYU. After immediately clicking and sharing an entrepreneurial spirit, Alyssa and Jing started their first business in college, AJ Creations, a boutique graphic design business. They ended up staying roommates for seven more years and while pursuing thriving careers across finance, design, and tech, they started a creative support group called "Collective" with a dozen close friends which resulted in numerous side-projects being finished; novels being published, records being produced, and served as a catalyst for multiple career shifts.

In 2018, Alyssa and Jing launched the predecessor to Muse, Collective Museum, where they tested unique immersive environments and hands-on experiential programming in NYC public space. During the course of the 14 installments, Collective engaged over 1400 people and witnessed the unexpected, yet delightful result of people falling into their flow, becoming so immersed in the experience they lost track of time and most didn't even check their phone once! It was through the experience of Collective Museum that informed Alyssa & Jing that a place to creatively recharge is much needed and currently missing in the compendium of spaces.

Cofounders, Alyssa Gundred and Jing Wang Herman

Alyssa Gundred, Cofounder and CEO, brings expertise in growth hacking and tech build outs for large workspaces such as WeWork and Convene. As the Head of Ops for Myriad360, Alyssa grew the company from 12 people and $3mm in revenues to 100+ employees and $150mm+ in revenues. Prior to Myriad, Alyssa was the Art Director for Original Artists, who subleased 15,000 sqft of creative studios. Alyssa was responsible for designing a custom gallery space and sound studios for tenants, including Sting and Bette Midler. Alyssa lives in Brooklyn with her wife, Anna, and twin sons, Atlas & Loden. 🌈

Jing Wang Herman, Cofounder and CFO, brings expertise in finance, corporate strategy, and launching a consumer brand in the most cut-throat space. As the founding US CEO of Gett, Jing launched in NYC with a tiny fraction of Uber's budget and helped to grow the $20mm startup into a unicorn. Prior to Gett, Jing was an investment banker and corporate strategist at Bear Stearns/JPMorgan where she was named Forbes 30 Under 30 in Finance. Jing is an artist who immigrated from China and was a proud licensed NYC taxi driver.

Core Team, Jennie Willink & Damon Kornhauser

Jennie Willink, Chief Creative Producer, brings 25+ years of experience in the entertainment industry and is the go-to NYC guru for anything immersive. She is the mastermind behind several experiential popups in recent years, including the Collective Museum's street installations in 2018. Over the span of 13 years as the Senior Vice President of Creative Development and Executive Producer, Jennie made Blue Man Group a global sensation in over 250 cities. Jennie also produced and operated the Drama Desk Award winning immersive dinner experience, Queen of the Night. She is a proud novelist represented by ICM.

Damon Kornhauser, Chief Operating Officer, brings expertise in human-centered service and experience design and a passion for creating spaces of collective actualization. For nearly 20 years he managed and consulted on service design, organizational strategy and operations, and learning and leadership development with brands as Union Square Hospitality, Batali Bastianich, and SoHo House where he opened 3 locations. From 2017-2020, Damon led Alley Coworking’s strategy and operations in NYC, DC, Boston, and Palo Alto. With a parallel passion for education, Damon is also the founder of NextUs, a youth-led innovation community.

Why You Should Invest in Muse

Muse's Value Proposition is Trifold — for Individuals, Companies, and Landlords

Prior to Covid-19, the 2019 global flexible workspace market was valued at $26B with expected annual growth of 16%, from 18,900 flexible workspaces worldwide in 2019 to 30,000 by 2022. Global members were expected to grow from 1.7mm in 2017 to 5.1mm by 2022.

In the post-Covid world, many companies have already decided not to renew their office lease and to pay for more upscale team building offsites on a monthly or quarterly basis, or pay for employees to work part time from a third space. Only 3.6% of the workforce worked remotely half the time or more in 2019, but up to 30% are estimated to be working remotely "multiple days a week" by end of 2021.

Today approximately one-third of the flexible office space in the U.S. is provided by WeWork. Nine other operators account for 35% of total flexible office space and the rest (32%) is scattered across 690 more operators. Our closest competitors are the Assemblage ($300mm+ raised), Convene ($150mm+ raised), the Wing ($100mm+ raised), and SohoHouse (over $600mm+ raised at $2bn).

Attractive for Individuals

Muse’s target members are Millennials and Gen-Z creatives, professionals, and entrepreneurs who are experience driven, have FOMO, and are hungry for meaningful IRL connections and community. As this cohort begin to have kids and modern parenting pressures rage on, it will be more critical than ever to provide on-site childcare. This generation will define what work is going to look like for the rest of this century and how to fully immerse life with work.

Important to Businesses

Especially given new developments with COVID-19, and a new era of remote connectivity, corporations and startups have more reason than ever to provide their best talent optimal flexibility. For concerned executives, Muse answers the big question of where creativity and collaboration will come from and provides fertile grounds for the much needed morale boost - whether it's individual tinkering or immersive and spirited team building off-sites.

Valuable for Landlords

We believe landlords stand to benefit from Muse's seamless integration of flexible workspace, childcare, immersive programming, entertainment, and hospitality. Invoking the aura of the cultural salons of Paris and Vienna, Muse will be the place to go once a week for an experience that can never be replicated at home or in a traditional office, or in a plain vanilla coworking space.

Muse is currently raising early stage capital to fund operations and secure a lease in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Contact us, to discuss if this is the right investment for your portfolio!

An Amenity for Your Building

Muse is answering the call for a third workspace (with childcare!) that is safe & stimulating to work from 1 or 2 days a week. Having Muse in your building will attract the TAMI sector tenants who want to offer Muse as an amenity to their employees.

Even before the pandemic, a paradigm shift toward working from home, working from third spaces and overall flexibility with on-site childcare was underway. Companies have been changing their office policies in order to attract the brightest Gen Z and Millenial talent. In a pre-Covid CBRE survey, 70% of job seekers said the ability to work remotely is a must-have when considering a new job. In the same survey, Gen Z and Millennial workers voiced a strong interest in being able to work in different places than the office, pointing to social workspaces or private huddle rooms for smaller groups as ideal third places.*

Fast forward to the post-Covid world, the home has become everyone’s first place, and companies are agonizing over what the second place should be – stagger back to the traditional office or reduce costs by asking employees to work in a flexible workspace part time? Muse fills the gap.
